PLACE OF LEARNING

The educational programme of the memorial ranges from various types of tours to lectures and readings. In addition to more in-depth learning opportunities in the form of workshops, multi-day seminars and on-site training courses, we also offer an outreach programme upon request. This programme also includes city tours through various districts of Kassel.

More information about our current events can be found under "News".

Breitenau as an extracurricular place of learning

Option of organising a half-day visit

Pupils from grade 9 on (all school types), adults

The memorial's basic learning package is approximately 3 hours long (including a break). It consists of the basic modules 1 (approx. 90 minutes) and 2 (approx. 60 minutes).

BASIC MODULE 1: WALKING TOUR OF THE HISTORICAL SITE

The learning group will be guided across the grounds of the former Breitenau concentration camp (1933/1934) and the "work education camp" (1940-45). This module also includes the prison area of the former monastery church, which is only accessible in the context of a tour.

BASIC MODULE 2: INTRODUCTION TO WORKING WITH FILES

Based on reproductions of individual case files, originating from the period of the "work education camp", the learning group is given the opportunity to approach the individual persecution routes and fates of the prisoners from various perspectives. The learning group is guided and supported by staff members of the memorial.

Upon prior arrangement, the basic modules can also be expanded upon with more in-depth modules (see all-day visit). Feel free to download our comprehensive educational programmes including all basic and in-depth modules HERE

Option of organising a full-day visit

Pupils from grade 9 on (all school types), adults

As part of our full-day or multi-day offer, it is possible to choose one of the in-depth modules following the basic modules. Once Basic Modules 1 and 2 have been completed, an in-depth module would follow the lunch break and take between 90 and 120 minutes. The following in-depth modules are available:

IN-DEPTH MODULE 1: CREATIVE WRITING

The study group writes their own texts based on thoughts, feelings and impressions that were gained during their visit to the memorial, allowing the group members to process the events.

IN-DEPTH MODULE 2: GALLERY WALKS

In small groups, members of the study group look more closely at the individual fates of prisoners with the help of biographies and, in their new-found role as experts, create a tour to be presented at the end of the module.

IN-DEPTH MODULE 3: PEER-TO-PEER

Based on the existing digital educational offers of the memorial (QR code tour), the learning group undertakes an in-depth examination of the various historical places on the entire site of the former concentration and "work education camp". At the end, the results can be presented in the form of a peer-to-peer tour.

During all in-depth modules, learning groups are guided and supported by staff members of the memorial. Feel free to download our comprehensive educational programmes including all basic and in-depth modules HERE.

We kindly ask that you make a reservation at least six weeks before your scheduled visit.

QR code tour

The memorial's educational programme has been expanded by a QR code tour as part of a project funded by the HLZ and the Stiftung EVZ, the latter being a foundation that endeavours to keep the memory of National Socialist persecution alive and advocates for human rights and international understanding.

In addition to the regular tours, visitors can now explore the historical site on their own with freely available fold-out instructions and a smartphone or tablet. The tour includes ten stations. The fold-out instructions include a map that provides orientation on the site and a timeline of the entire history as well as brief information about each station. In addition, visitors can scan a QR code at each station to access detailed information on the history of Breitenau in text, image and video format.

The QR code tour is also suitable for groups and school classes as a peer-to-peer tour. For example, individual stations can be accessed independently in small groups via the QR codes and then introduced to the other participants in presentation form.
